norwich: my favorite place

Last spring, I studied abroad at University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, UK for five months. As I am very much a homebody and love to be with my family here in Oklahoma, I was very unsure about how I would enjoy being abroad in Norwich. Little did I know, it would become my favorite place! Norwich is a quaint English town with quirky spots and beautiful, traditional architecture alike. Below is a photo I took while exploring the city my first month there.

Not only is the city itself beautiful, the campus of the University I attended was quite impressive as well. As most everything on UEA's campus is made of concrete, the students refer to it as the concrete jungle. The most interesting and notable thing that I recall about the campus are these funky dorms--the Ziggurats (Zigs). Although I did not live in the Zigs, they were fun to look at from the window of the library while I procrastinated my summative assignments.

When I wasn't cooped up in the library, my friends and I were most likely out to eat at our favorite restaurant, Ji The Chicken Shop. The name is pretty self-explanatory--it was a chicken shop with the best chicken strips. What made this place stand out is the fact that it was a Vietnamese chicken shop, so they had a ton of different seasonings for their chicken that I was not accustomed to. My personal favorite was their plum seasoning (sweet and salty) which I miss dearly and cannot find anything similar in America...HELP.

My time in Norwich is something I treasure deeply and miss everyday.  I cherish the places I explored and the people I met; the experience was truly life-changing as cliché as it sounds. If you ever have the chance to visit England, I would highly recommend checking out Norwich!

  1. Oh, how wonderful that you got to actually live there in Norwich, Katelyn! I did my master's degree in Oxford and traveled around some, but I never visited Norwich. I just know the place name from Julian of Norwich. And I know the feeling of longing for a special food you cannot find anywhere else; I used to live in Berkeley CA just a few blocks from Udupi Palace
where I would get uthappams. I am uthappam-deprived where I live now, alas! (And yes, I tortured myself by looking at the menu to make those links....... now I am really craving them......)

  2. Hello, it's me stopping by again! Ugh,you're making me want to go to Europe. Your pictures are lovely, and I love chicken strips (and Vietnamese food). The best part of traveling is the food. So many yummy things around the world. I'm hoping to go to Europe this summer, so maybe I'll have the chance to go to Norwich! Have a good weekend!

week two story: family traditions

It was my first day at a new school in a new place, and I was not looking forward to it. I had never attended a public school, but my mom told me it was time.  "Rish, you're seventeen now. You know you have to do this to carry on our family's traditions," my mother pressured. "Mom, I know," I say, slipping the fresh canvas backpack over my shoulders.  I have never carried a schoolbag before, so this was different. My outdated textbooks weren't the only thing weighing me down, though. You see, the women in my family are all rakshasis.  If you don't know what rakshasis are, we're creatures with the ability to lure people in, then eat them when we feel it's right. Naturally, we aren't the most attractive, with two huge fangs protruding from our mouths and a not-so petite figure.  Luckily, we have the opportunity to shape shift into whatever we want. This makes luring even the least gullible very easy for us. In my family, w...

week three story: dharma's funeral

The skies were grey over the bright lotus blossoms the day of Dharma's funeral. Dharma, who had ruled the kingdom of Koshola for upwards of forty years, was the monarch of many peoples' dreams. She was kind and understanding, but, most of all, she was wise and strong-willed. The kingdom had not had any conflict since the time Dharma took the throne; she was level-headed and preferred her peace over any war.  Throughout her rule, the only thing causing Dharma disdain was her daughter, Binsa. As her name suggests, Binsa was a fearless girl, so much so that it got her in trouble many times, but she was always redeemed by Dharma.  As Binsa grew older, she became more like her mother everyday. Although she already possessed the agency to be the next monarch, Binsa began helping build up the kingdom's marginalized communities that desperately needed assistance. She was turning out to be a great leader, but she didn't think it would come so soon. Dharma had been sick for man...
