introduction to an aspiring teacher

Hello! I'm Katelyn Callahan, a soon-to-be 21 year-old senior at the University of Oklahoma. Originally, I'm from Tulsa, OK, and I have lived in Oklahoma for the majority of my life minus about three years when I lived in Kansas. I'm an enneagram type one, so do with that what you will. In college, I'm studying Language Arts Education in hopes of becoming a middle school English teacher. As you might be able to presume from my major, I love to write. I especially love all things technical about writing, especially grammar.

Aside from my love for writing, I love cats! In fact, I love cats so much that I have a memorial tattoo for my childhood cat, Jasper. Below are some pictures of Jasper and the tattoo I got in his memory. Another fun fact: I got this tattoo in London while I was studying abroad!

Another thing that I'm really into is astrology. It might seem silly, but I think it's extremely interesting to learn about. Some may think it's farfetched, but I believe there is some truth to it as naive as that may sound. Everything I read about my own signs always seems way too accurate to be untrue. I myself am a Virgo sun, Scorpio rising, and Gemini moon. If you know anything about astrology, please tell me your signs! It makes for a great research opportunity.

When I'm not loving on cats or doing research about astrology, I am probably either cooking or baking something. Second to sleeping, I love being in the kitchen. Even when I don't feel like making anything myself, I am almost always watching some cooking/baking related content on TV or YouTube. Some of my favorite things that I make are Spanish rice, meatballs, and chocolate chip cookies! Many times a day I will find myself scrolling Pinterest trying to find a recipe to try. I like to think I'm a chef, and my family and friends don't mind it much either.

Lastly, I am extremely passionate about kids and learning, leading to my future career as a teacher. Currently, I work as a daycare teacher, and I love to see the kids I work with grow and get smarter every day. When I have my own classroom, I hope to be the support system students need going through school, especially middle school because of the awkwardness of it all. Once I graduate in Spring 2021, I plan to return to Tulsa and work for an urban school district in the area.

  1. Hi Katelyn! I think it is very fun that you are into astrology and enneagrams and all that. Even though I don't really abide by it a lot of my friends do and as a result I know my Myers-Briggs, enneagram type and my zodiac sign. I'm a Libra and a type three enneagram I think. Your tattoo is also very well done and looks good!

  2. It is always so exciting to meet education majors in this class, Katelyn! Some of the most inspiring teachers I follow at Twitter are middle school language arts teachers, and I hope you will have a wonderful career ahead. And that memorial tattoo of your cat is such a beautiful idea: the tattoo artist did an amazing job! I love my lovely girl-cat this fall, so I have her on the wallpaper for my computer and on my phone, so it's like she's watching over me still. A friend of mine wrote a whole book about her cat (also Siamese) with all the dialogues they had as she remembered her; if you are interested, it is a remarkable piece of writing... the author is Indian, but she lives in England now: Suki by Suniti Namjoshi.
And maybe you will want to use this class to learn about Indian astrology: it is very much a thing! They call it Jyotisha: Wikipedia. Just like we have gods for the names of the planets, they do also: Navagraha... and days of the week too: Indian Days of the Week. All things you can explore and learn about in this class if you are curious, seeing how it intersects with the planetary astrology you already know. :-)

  3. Katelyn, that was a very detailed post! I feel I underdeveloped mine now, with yours as a reference. My wife insists I’m an enneagram type six; the significance of such a statement is entirely lost on me, but you may have a bit more understanding. What are your go-to YouTube food channels? I’m quite partial to “Food Wishes”, if you haven’t had the chance, I highly recommend checking him out. Hope all goes well with your semester!

  4. Hi Katelyn,

I didn't know you were taking this class, too! That's awesome. I have a cat named Jasper as well. He's a fire-tip and cross-eyed. He's a chubby love muffin. My son named him after Tom's scaredy-cat cousin on Tom and Jerry. I'm not into astrology, but I am into herbs and crystals. We can have some fun conversations to see who in class will give us the side-eye.

    Talk to you later!

  5. Hi Katelyn,

I am so glad to have so many ELA ed. majors in this class! I think we have lots of things in common! I am also from Tulsa (though I actually went to Sapulpa schools). I also love cats and sleeping. Baking is one of my favorite things to do! I am, however, horrible at cooking- thank God for takeout because without it there would be no hope! I am looking forward to keeping up with your blog this semester!

  6. Hi, Katelyn! First, I think your cat tattoo is really cool and very well done and my favorite teacher in high school was my English teacher! I’m also starting to get into astrology while I still don’t believe in it a lot I am always surprised to read how much truth some of it is. I’m a Virgo sun and a Scorpio rising too so I guess we have that in common!

  7. Hi Katelyn! You are inspiring and molding the minds of the next generation with your profession and I give great applause to you. Kids begin school at toddler age and are entrusted to teachers for a majority of their day. Inspirational teachers are the fuel for children. I know personally, that at each part of school (elementary, middle, and high), I had a teacher that completely believed in me and my capabilities. These people changed my life. Thank you for being that person to so many future children!

  8. Hi Katelyn! I've finally found your blog. We have some things in common- ELA's majors, cat lovers, and astrology gals! I still need to add you on Costar! I'm a Pieces sun, Virgo moon, and Scorpio rising. I wish that we had cooking in common, but we don't :( I'm addicted to take out. I'm excited to share stories this semester! (Also, love the pink in this blog!!)

  9. Hi Katelyn, nice to meet you! I am also from T-town but I'm an enneagram type 3 haha! As a pre-law student, I also LOVE to write, kinda why I took this class. Honestly, reading through your post, I feel like we have a lot of things in common! Although I'm more of a dog person and don't know too much about astrology, I do love to cook! I can tell from your introduction you have a very kind heart and I know your future middle school kiddos are gonna be lucky to have you as a teacher!

  10. That is cool that you want to be a teacher. Oklahoma really needs more teachers!! I am super duper allergic to cats so I can not touch them but I do like watching funny videos of them. I love to cook and bake as well. I am very science based and am not a big fan of astrology. I am actually taking a personality class right now and we talked about astrology a bit.

  11. Hi Katelyn!
I love pintrest too! I also love copy me that for recipes. You should check it out. You can add a little button on your search bar and save recipes to the copy me that website. It is a great place to keep yummy ideas you come across or search through other people's ideas. You can also edit the recipe when you save it!

  12. Hi Katelyn,
I’m not a big grammar person myself. However, through this class I found this hilarious joke about oxford commas, JFK, Stalin, and strippers, and it makes me laugh too hard every time I see it. I’m also not a big astrology person (I’m a Cancer that’s all I know), but I really like astronomy. Once I graduate I hope to take some side classes in astrophysics, chemistry, and plant biology, all things I love to learn about without the pressure of school.

  13. Hi Katelyn!
My friends and I love to assess and debate about each other's enneagram type. That is amazing you want to be a middle school teacher. I am sure teaching English requires a lot of patience and love for those kiddos. Also, Oklahoma desperately needs more teachers like you. I am sorry for the loss of your cat, and your tattoo of him is beautiful.
Good luck, and I look forward to reading your stories and project!

  14. Hi Katelyn!
Reading your bio, I feel like we'd be really good friends in real life! I was studying to be a Spanish teacher before I had to tweak my major, we both have tattoos (I LOVE ink [and cats!]), just got back from studying abroad (it's super cool that you got that tattoo in London!) and I also love to bake! I'm a Cancer sun, Capricorn moon, and Virgo Rising. Good luck, and enjoy your last year and a half of college! It really flies by, I promise.

  15. Hello Katelyn,
I love to cook and bake as well. This year I've been trying to save money and cook my meals rather than buy them, so I've tried many new dishes lately. I've been told that I'm the definition of an Enneagram type 2. Hopefully that's a good thing, LOL. Your cat tattoo is really cool. I have a full sleeve on each arm, and my left arm has a dragon on it. Not quite the same as a cat, but poh-tay-toe, poh-tah-toe. Looking forward to reading your work!

week two story: family traditions

It was my first day at a new school in a new place, and I was not looking forward to it. I had never attended a public school, but my mom told me it was time.  "Rish, you're seventeen now. You know you have to do this to carry on our family's traditions," my mother pressured. "Mom, I know," I say, slipping the fresh canvas backpack over my shoulders.  I have never carried a schoolbag before, so this was different. My outdated textbooks weren't the only thing weighing me down, though. You see, the women in my family are all rakshasis.  If you don't know what rakshasis are, we're creatures with the ability to lure people in, then eat them when we feel it's right. Naturally, we aren't the most attractive, with two huge fangs protruding from our mouths and a not-so petite figure.  Luckily, we have the opportunity to shape shift into whatever we want. This makes luring even the least gullible very easy for us. In my family, w...
